Reduce firmware size for M750s and swap

Hello,

if I want to reduce the size of the firmware, is it enough to delete some on the plugins,
or do I have to fix some config files then, for example?

Can I use a swap-file or swap partition on USB?

Do you want more free size in RootFS or JFFS2 (/etc)?
This are two different things and currently only RootFS is in firmware.

You can add more programs and files to RootFS using LZMA compression (a parameter in .config) and for JFFS2 you can delete these directories without problems:
/etc/webif/www
/etc/vdr/plugins/channellists

You can also disable some plugins (for example aide-help) in the parameter "vdr_pluginopts" in "/etc/rc.local.conf" and delete config files under /etc/vdr/plugins/<plugin_name>

If you do not worry losing the forward/rewind number (x1, x2, x3, ...) when play recordings, you can run this by telnet:

swap-file is very poor in performance and if you have a swap partition on USB is automounted at start, although you have that to change hd_swap="YES" in /etc/rc.local.conf for umount at shutdown.

you don't have to apologize! I do appreciate the work you did!

There are two things I want to reach:
a) create more space for the epg
b) which is more important: I suffer from frame drops etc. when I record a program and watch another at the same time. At the beginning, I thought it was caused my network since I used nfs (via ethernet). But even a directly connected HDD via USB did not help. So now I think, maybe the box itself became too slow? So I want to reduce the overhead in the VDR to gain more performance. I don't want to use the lite version, though, because a HDD in the living room is not acceptable (so I want to stick to nfs).

That is very strange, with a HDD-USB we can have 4 recordings and play other simultaneously without frame drops, although remote control response and OSD menus are slower than usual.

Performance in usb has been improved substantially in our version.

You can run "top" command by telnet when frame drops happen to see if there are any problem with memory or CPU.

Do you use many plugins at once?

Just in case.

When you connect the hard disk to usb port, Is your hard disk fed with the giga or externally?

It is not possible to use a disk wich is fed by the usb port, it can cause your frame drops, its feed has to be external.

Frist answer: it is fed externally, it is currently a WD mybook 320GB.
With the Siemens Software, I have a long positive experience with it.

If you have some time, I can tell you what I did so far and why I tend to believe, that my box has a hardware problem.

I used my box with the Siemens Software for some years, at least 1 year with a relatively weak NAS (allnet 6250) and a 1TB USB drive attached to it, using samba - without any problems!
After I have filled the harddrive with about 750mb, frame drops started - without anything changed.Okay, I tought, the nas is too weak to handle the amount of data. so I bought a dockstar and flashed it with debian to use it as better NAS (for 25€) - but no cure.
So I switched to VDR-NG EM 0.6 Pro using NFS - no cure. So I used my old mybook as completely empty drive - nu cure. So I now connected it directly to my box - still frame drops (watching such records could even mean, the movie stops completely) and far to noisy.
Now I am trying to tune it - therefore the question, and btw, top is a good idea, but I am loosing hope.

So that is where I am right now - any ideas are welcome.

I have some news about my problems. I switched to the www.open7x0.org VDR-NG version from 2008 with the windows firmware builder - and all my problems are gone. That means, no frame drops, no epg problems, everything which is supposed to work works. I don't know, what is going wrong with your version, which I would have preferred, because it has more features, still under development and easier to install (new versions of VDR-NG from open7x0 have to be compiled by myself).
However, I have no clue why there are problems with your version and I don't know how to figure it out. I can't do too much much testing either, since this is my main settop box for watching TV.
I can image without a M750s, debugging for you is difficult.

Perhaps our firm is right and the problem is that our setting by default does not work well in a M750S.

We include under /etc files as channels logos, which in your case prevent record the EPG.
Did you try to delete the files as I indicated above?

We also include some plugins by default and memory usage may be bigger.
Have you used "top" as I said before to see if is that the problem with frame drops?

Have you disabled skin enigma and other plugins that do not use by default in open7x0.org version?

no, I have not tried to delete the channel logos. The germany version I have running has channel logos, but not for all channel I use store the epg - without any problem. (I did not realize to delete any logos, still can't)
No, sorry, I did not try top - my family was sort of panicing without proper TV, so I had to seek a solution quickly.

In the german version I use now I haved added the enigma skin and the extrec plugin without any problem.

I will see if I get a second chance to test your vdr and I will let you know, then. Thanks for your help!

German version has no channel logos for webif in /etc/webif/www in png format (more size occupied) and by default don't load plugins as Teletext that can be problematic.

I will try to make a special version for M750S changing some parameters to see if it works correctly.

I installed the 0.6 Pro Version, no changes at all are made so far.
I realized, that the IP-Address I have entered for the installer is not taken over, but I have fixed the problem by hand.

This is good news for add support to M750S.

All right with top command, now you can run "df -h" to see filesystems usage.

Then you can try to clean /etc dir as I commented in a message above and disable some plugins as channellists, osdteletext and aide.

today, I started the spanish box again (no further changes so far) - and as before, no EPG-Data available.
I adjusted the fstab, trying to mount my nfs-shares - but no matter what I do, the directories I want to use as mount point (/var/media/USBHDD1) keep disappearing - it is a bit frustrating. Is there some english dokumention I could read?

Thanks by this comparision between firmwares, but german version also uses much more RAM.
Are you sure that only was watching live TV?
Can you repeat that?

You have enough space in /etc for EPG, it may be a problem with the default settings, you can try to close VDR and erase configuration file with:

You also can copy the file /etc/vdr/setup.conf (and other conf files) from german version.

In spanish version, mount net shares is disabled by default, but you can enable it in parameter "do_net_mount" of /etc/rc.local.conf.

I made more space in /etc as proposed, but it did not help with the epg issue.
Now, I took over the setup.conf from the german version, and now, the epg works, almost!
If I compare it with the german epg, then for the same channels, the epg of the german version has more data, or in other words, the spanish version has more gaps in the epg. Is the update differently often and long?
In the german menu, there is a submenu to configure the epg cron-like. I have not found it in the spanish version. How can I compare the epg update frequency and so on?

Can you attach setup.conf working in M750S?

Really, with spanish version you'd have more data in EPG because "Content Descriptor" and "Parental Rating Descriptor" are added (although it is possible that the channels that you have not add this extra information).

EPG scan periodicity is setted in Setup -> EPG -> EPG scan timeout (h)

For epgscan as in german version, you have to activate the scheduler plugin editing /etc/rc.local.conf and adding "-Pscheduler" to vdr_pluginopts parameter, for example:

thank you for the reply. It is not the amount of data, what worries me, it is the amount of gaps, i.e. programms not appearing in the EPG. So for the german Children's Channel (Kika), there are for the next day no programms between 6:00 and 14:00, but this gap is not there in the german version, just as an example.
So maybe the spanish version did not spend long enough during the epg update at this channel to receive the data completely?
I will continue to check this behaviour.

You can attach a file if you don't use "Respuesta Rapida" but the full-fledged form that you'll be redirected to after clicking on "Previsulizacion" (=preview). At the bottom of that page, you'll find "Anadir archivo" and buttons in your browser's language.
